Structured Abstract
Introduction:ThepresentstudyinvestigatedtherelationshipbetweenfacialskeletalpatternsandmorphologyofthepalateinadultpatientswithClassIIImalocclusionusingstructuralequationmodelling(SEM).
Setting and sample population: Onehundredconebeamcomputedtomographyim-agesofClassIIIadultswereevaluatedforskeletalmeasurements. Materials and methods: Theskeletalmeasurementswereclassifiedintothevertical, anteroposteriorandtransversegroupbasedonfactoranalysis.3Dscanningmodelof
themaxillawasanalysedbyGeneralizedprocrustesanalysis(GPA)andprincipalcom-
ponentanalysis(PCA).Structuralequationmodellingwasusedtoanalyserelation-
shipamongtheskeletalandmorphometricfactors. Results: According to the factor analysis, latent variables were extracted by eachskeletal variable. First principal component (PC1) and PC2 of palatalmorphologywereusedtoanalyserelationshipwithskeletalvariables.Asresultsofthestructuralequationmodel,thetransverselatentvariablehadthemostinfluenceonPC1,fol-lowedbyverticalandanteroposteriorvariables.Thisresultmeansthatasthefacialwidthincreases,thepalatebecomesnarrower,deeperandlonger.
Conclusions: TherelationshipbetweentheskeletalpatternwithClassIIImalocclu-
sionandpalatalmorphologywasanalysedthroughSEM.Thetransversefacialskel-
etalpatternshowedthehighestcorrelationwithPC1ofpalatalmorphology.
